Durga Ashtami
The Ashtami observance of Navratri honours Durga through worship and family traditions.
Meaning & observance
A devotional practice
Devi traditions often combine a familiar prayer, flowers and lamp offerings with recitation. Navratri and annual pujas can include family or temple arrangements that are separate from a daily lunar-date reference.
Prepare for the day
Choose your place before checking the date. Open the complete day page for the local tithi and solar or lunar events. Arrange any temple visit or family programme directly; a calculated lunar date is not a confirmation of a temple’s schedule.
Durga Ashtami · Maa Mahagauri worship
Ashtami is one of the central days of Devi worship. Mahagauri, the eighth Navadurga form, expresses serenity and renewal. Many North Indian households also observe Kanya Pujan on Ashtami; other families hold it on Navami.
Bhog and puja preparation
Arrange flowers, clean water and a fresh food offering. Coconut and coconut preparations are popular Mahagauri offerings. Halwa, puri and chana are customary Kanya Pujan foods in many North Indian households; choose suitable ingredients for the children you invite.

- Prepare before guests arrive
Set out the image, water, flowers and food offering. If you are hosting Kanya Pujan, arrange comfortable seating, drinking water and food separately from the prayer area.
- Invoke Maa Mahagauri
Begin with your familiar opening prayer, offer flowers and recite her name mantra. Reflect on clarity, kindness and the renewal of your intention.
- Offer bhog and complete aarti
Present the fresh offering and continue with a familiar Devi reading. Perform the household aarti and distribute prasad.
- Welcome children respectfully
Where Kanya Pujan is observed, welcome the invited children, offer a seat, apply tilak if welcomed, serve prasad and give a small gift or dakshina. Respect each child’s comfort, consent and dietary needs.
Read more · Kanya Pujan and Sandhi Puja
Kanya Pujan honours girls as a manifestation of Devi; the number invited and the meal vary by household. In Bengali Durga Puja, Kumari Puja and Sandhi Puja have their own liturgy. Sandhi Puja spans the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. It is a specific junction, not the whole Ashtami day.
Questions about this observance
Is Sandhi Puja the same as Kanya Pujan?
No. Sandhi Puja marks the Ashtami–Navami junction. Kanya or Kumari worship honours the divine feminine through a girl or girls. Their procedures and scheduling depend on the tradition.
Should I break my fast immediately after Kanya Pujan?
Some households conclude after their Ashtami worship, while others continue through Navami. Use the rule attached to the fast you actually undertook; a general tithi interval is not a universal parana time.
Read a familiar Devi prayer
Prepare flowers, a lamp and your customary household offering. Keep the reading materials together so the family can follow the recitation.

Questions about Durga Ashtami
Where do I find the date?
Use “See this year’s local date” below. The collection places this observance in Ashvina in the lunar calendar; the date changes with the chosen year and place.
Is the tithi time the puja time?
A tithi is a lunar interval and can begin or end between sunrises. This collection uses the middle of the daylight period as its date-reference instant. A displayed tithi interval does not make every minute of that interval a ceremonial muhurat.
Can I follow my family’s custom?
Yes. Preserve your household or sampradaya’s way of observing the festival. If a fast, initiation or formal rite is involved, use its specific instructions.
How do I share this reading?
