Durga Puja calendar: keep the ritual and tradition together

A Navratri day number does not replace the Bengali Durga Puja schedule. Here is a practical way to organise the right calendar.

Start with the ritual name

A seasonal calendar can contain household Navratri worship and a Bengali Durga Puja programme at the same time. They share the Devi season, but a household day counter is not enough to select every Puja ritual.

For a visit or ceremony, write the actual name used by your temple or Puja committee. Distinguish the daily programme, an Ashtami or Navami observance and a specifically timed ritual. The committee’s public event schedule and the almanac’s astronomical interval serve different purposes.

Compare like with like

If you are comparing two Panjikas, record the edition, calculation method, place and ritual instruction. Regional rules are part of the answer. A shared language or the same festival title does not prove that both publications follow identical precedence.

The Panchanga Mimamsa source review is useful here because it discusses disagreements in ritual decisions. It is not a licence to collapse all regional practices into generic sunrise-tithi logic. A modern astronomical position can be accurate while the applied festival rule still needs review.

Keep a useful family schedule

Use separate entries for the temple or pandal appointment and for any household worship. Include the venue, the published programme and the contact point used by the organiser. Check again near the visit if the programme has changed.

PanchangSaathi currently distinguishes its calculated Bengali Drik date layer from a fully certified Bengali ritual calendar. An unsupported ritual should remain visibly unresolved. For an officiated Puja, obtain the named instruction from your priest or organising institution rather than inferring it from a colourful day badge.

This approach preserves the tradition and still gives visitors a simple, practical schedule.
