What is celebrated on Dhanteras?
Dhanteras, or Dhantrayodashi, falls on Krishna Trayodashi. Devotional accounts remember Dhanvantari appearing during the churning of the ocean, carrying the vessel of amrita. Households also honour Lakshmi and Kubera through their inherited worship practices. Health, care, gratitude and responsible use of resources are meaningful themes of the day. Dhanvantari worship, evening Lakshmi-Kubera Puja and Yama Deepam are related observances with distinct ritual reference periods.
A simple household preparation
- Clean the worship space and prepare a stable, heat-resistant place for the lamp.
- Arrange the images, flowers, water, fruit and familiar offerings used in your family.
- Begin with Ganesha remembrance, then follow your household’s Lakshmi-Kubera prayers and aarti.
- Share prasad and make room for generosity, care for elders or service.
