Meaning and tradition

Rama Ekadashi falls in the dark fortnight associated with Kartika in the Purnimanta calendar. Devotional retellings describe Chandrabhaga and Shobhana and the spiritual significance of devotion. Different regional month names do not necessarily mean a different astronomical tithi.

How to prepare

Follow the fasting practice taught in your family or temple. ISKCON practice avoids grains and beans while giving greater attention to chanting and devotional reading. A full dry fast is not necessary for every devotee. Those with medical needs should follow appropriate professional advice instead of changing prescribed meals or medicines for a calendar.

Plan your celebration

Choose the place where the observance will be performed. Check the ritual date before arranging travel, an invitation or a reminder. Family and temple programmes may follow a named regional or sectarian tradition, so confirm the programme with the host.
